Ozonator is a device ,with an aerator at the end of  it’s hose,  inserted in  water, food or oil. It adds a few amount of ozone &  thus results in a sanitizing as well as oxidizing effect. Ozone is produced by adding an extra  atom of oxygen to a oxygen  molecule, i.e., O3 instead of the usual O2.

As the component used in ozonator is mainly ozone, the main constituents of  ozone needs to be known Ozone or tri-oxygen , is an inorganic molecule with  chemical formula O3 . It is a pale blue coloured gas with a distinctively pungent smell. It is also called as an allotrope of oxygen which  is much less stable than that of diatomic allotrope O2 . Ozone is formed from di-oxygen(O2) by the action of ultraviolet rays  & also atmospheric electric discharges, & is present in low concentration  throughout Earth’s stratosphere.  Ozone makes up to  only 0.6 ppm of earth’s atmosphere.


This part is a small discussion about ozonator as air purifier.

Some indoor air purifiers or air cleaners emits ozone, which is a major component of outdoor smog, either as a by-product of their design or intentionally. Those which  emit ozone intentionally are called ozone purifiers .As ozone reacts with some other molecules under ordinary condition, some manufacturers claim sometimes that ozone produced by these devices can remove airborne particles & purify air, viruses, chemicals ,bacteria, moulds and odours. But ozone is not so effective in  cleaning air except at extremely high, unsafe ozone level, & it is only then partially effective.

Ionizers & electrostatic precipitators are other types of air cleaners which emit ozone, but it does so as a by-product of their design & function. These devices are designed to electrically charged particle & remove them from  air; ozone is released through charging process. These devices emit less ozone typically than ozone generators. Some device is marketed with advertising claiming that they can kill virus, bacteria, mould and other biological contaminants & can remove chemical contaminants and odours.


However, study showed that, whenever ozone concentration is below the health standard, it does not remove biological contaminants effectively. Ozone also does not remove particles (e.g. dust & pollen) from  air, including particles  that are responsible for most allergic conditions. Research also show that ozone that is generated by air purifiers does little to remove chemical pollutants. Ozone is found to react with existing chemicals in air to create toxic pollutants, most are notably formaldehyde & also ultra fine particles.

Consumers purchase air purifiers sometimes to eradicate odours. Evidence shows that ozone concentration below health standards are not effective in removing many odour-causing chemical. Ozone also deadens one’s sense of smell. It not only does this in disguise rather than eliminate odors, it also have the dangerous effect of decreasing a person’s ability of detecting high ozone level. Ozone can also be used successfully to purify water in some other application. This is so due to the fact that high level of ozone can be used in water, most of the ozone reacts in water, &  people are not present typically when  ozone is used.
